Sports Licensed and Tailgate Industry Green-Light January 2008 Show
Buyers, Sellers & Leagues Confirm Need for Strong Trade Event

Time is money. And when there is money to be made in the licensed sports business, timing is important. These two ideas converged in discussions with licensors, licensed manufacturers and licensed buyers in the days following the Sports Licensing & Entertainment Marketplace and Tailgate • Picnic Show, which debuted in Las Vegas last November.

The result of these talks was a clear, across-the-board consensus: The industry wants and needs a robust annual trade event.

Thus the next Sports Licensing & Entertainment Marketplace and Tailgate • Picnic Show will be held Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, January 16 to 18, 2008 at a new venue, the Sands/Venetian Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Traeger Making Tasty Transition to Tailgating Market

Traeger is a name well known in the great American West—not to mention the great American backyard barbeque. The company has been around since the late 1930s in Oregon, where it got its start as a blacksmith shop. Fate intervened more than four decades later. Indeed, when a local walked into Traeger Heating with a tin bucket of wood pellets, the seeds were sown for what would become Traeger’s signature Pellet Fired Grills.

The story continues today with the launch of Traeger Commercial Smoker Grills. “We’re targeting restaurants, catering professionals, competition cooks and anyone wanting to produce high-quality outdoor-cooked barbecue with minimal effort,” says Distribution Specialist Christy Haynie. “The response has been great. So many of our customers are already familiar with Traeger, and they love the idea of commercial models.”

Traeger has been distributing commercially for 20 years with three models, the SMK150, SMK190, and SMK200. Each can literally serve hundreds of guests. “Our grills feature easy operation and automatic start, electronic temperature control, even heating and convection airflow,” says Haynie. “They also use Traeger hardwood pellets to deliver delicious flavor.”

Given its warm reception from food service professionals, Traeger is now looking to expand its reach. One market the company is pursuing is the tailgating industry. “There’s a great fit for us,” says Haynie. “Two of our commercial models have trailer mounts, and all three cater to large parties.”

To gain greater exposure, Traeger has stepped up its marketing efforts, including its involvement with the American Tailgater Association and plans to exhibit at the Sports Licensing & Entertainment Marketplace and Tailgate • Picnic Show. Haynie also feels that the Traeger brand will go a long way in increasing commercial sales.

“People know Traeger for amazing taste and quality,” she says. “Our wood pellets are obviously a great selling point. They are 100 percent natural with no dies or additives. Traeger simply makes a great product that sells itself.”
