The Sportula Giving New Life to Licensing & Tailgating

The best ideas for licensed products sometimes come when you least expect them. That was the case with the Sportula, which falls under the umbrella of the Wildman Business Group. "One of our early customers was Notre Dame," says David Bazzoni, vice president for Sportula Products. "They wanted to see something new and unique."

Bazzoni and his colleagues sat down for a brainstorming session, and the Sportula was born. An all-in-one grilling accessory made from laser-cut stainless steel, it flips burgers, brands them with a team logo and includes a bottle opener on the end of the handle. "The Sportula is a fantastic gift item," says Bazzoni. "It's also priced to be a wonderful impulse buy."

Targeted at sports fans, the Sportula is available in more than 60 schools, plus many NASCAR options. According to Bazzoni, the plan for licensing doesn't end there. "We're pursuing deals with other professional leagues," he says.

Companion products are also on the way. Those include a three-piece gift set and a coaster. "From the recent graduate to a grandparent, we have something for everyone," says Bazzoni.

To help promote the Sportula, the company is gearing up for its debut at the Sports Licensing and Tailgate Show in January. "We're really excited to exhibit," says Bazzoni. "The show fits what we do."

Given the broad appeal of the Sportula, enthusiasm about the product should be mutual. "We have just about all of the big schools," adds Bazzoni. We'd like to meet with as many buyers as possible."
