Flying Colors Taking Licensed Apparel to New Heights

Where do sport, style and licensing intersect? For the answer, all you need to do is visit the Flying Colors Apparel booth at the Sports Licensing and Tailgate Show next January.

"Flying Colors is an apparel brand that celebrates the fan of sport and the fan of style," says Co-Founder and Creative Director Andy Guze. "We're always looking forward while preserving tradition and being timeless."

The inspiration for Flying Colors came to Guze back in 2006 during the NBA Finals. A fan of the Miami Heat, he bought himself a Dwyane Wade jersey only to find that the fit didn't suit him. Guze, who worked for MTV at the time, knew more than a little about fashion on the cutting edge. He saw a chance to fill a niche in the world of licensed apparel.

Flying Colors was born soon after, and the company's first offering, a hip polo shirt, made an immediate impact. "We took a new approach to school pride," says Guze. "We pushed the envelope with innovation by putting a fresh spin on traditional looks."

Flying Colors Miami Hurricane
Miami has proven to be a good seller for Flying Colors.

Today, the Flying Colors collection has expanded to include styles for men and women. The company has focused mostly on collegiate licensing, with a roster of more than two dozen schools. Guze is constantly looking to lengthen that list, and pro leagues are also on the radar.

"We have high appeal with men between the ages of 18 and 35," he says. "With women, we're popular with all age groups. The polos have been getting a lot of attention."

Flying Colors' reach at retail has been diverse, and Guze hopes to continue that trend. That's one of the reasons the company is preparing for its debut at the Sports Licensing and Tailgate Show.

"We're eager to build brand awareness with more buyers," says Guze. "We see ourselves as an exciting alternative in the licensed marketplace."
